Some Amazing Facts about Lata Mangeshkar



Lata Mangeshkar is an Indian playback singer, and occasional music-composer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Her career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. She was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Indore State, Central India Agency, British India (now Indore, Madhya Pradesh).

She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi and Hindi. Read More 


1. After M.S.Subbalakshmi she is the only other female vocalist to have been given the Bharat Ratna.

2. Her surname comes from the village of Mangeshi where her ancestors hailed from. Her father’s family had the privilege of doing the Abhishekam at the Mangueshi Temple there. Their actual surname was Hardikar, but her father changed it to Mangeshkar after that place.


3. When her father passed away due to a heart attack, it was Master Vinayak, noted actor and director, who took care of them, and also started Lata’s career as a singer.

4.  "Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu" was her first Hindi song, which she sang incidentally for a Marathi movie Gaajabhau in 1943.

5. Her first Hindi movie was Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1946, directed by Vasant Joglekar, and music was composed by Datta Davekar.

6. Music director Ghulam Haider mentored her from 1948 onwards, when Master Vinayak passed away. He also gave her first major breakthrough as a singer with the movie Majboor in 1948. Lata in a later interview declared Ghulam Haider as her Godfather, the first music director who showed complete faith in me.

7. She has a Honorary Doctorate awarded to her by numerous universities including New York University.

8. She was the first Indian to perform in the Royal Albert Hall in London.

9. Her original name was Hema but was later changed to Lata, believed to have been taken form the name Latika who was a character in her father’s play.


10. She is a die-hard fan of cricket and has a permanent gallery reserved for her at the Lord’s.

11. She was a Member of the Parliament.

12. She was slow poisoned and nearly died because of it.

13. She sang the famous song “Aae Mere Watan Ke Logon” and all the people involved with the song pledged that the entire royalty received from the song would go to the War Widows Fund for perpetuity.

14. K. L. Saigal was her favourite singer. When she started earning money, she purchased a radio set and first thing she heard on the radio was announcement of K.L. Saigal's death. She threw the radio set away.

15. She never charged money from Yash Chopra for singing in his films because she considered him as her brother…

16. As Kishore Kumar was elder than her by 20 days she used to call him Kishoreda.. And as lata mangeshkar was senior to kishore kumar in the profession, kishore used to charge 1 rupee less, out of courtsey than lata in the films where they used to sing together.. :)
