Boost your metabolism in these simple steps


There are several things you may be able to do to boost your metabolism depending on your lifestyle. This list is by no means exhaustive but acts as a good starting point where you can begin doing it immediately.

Your metabolism is largely determined by your genetic predisposition however there are natural things you may do to help boost it. The key is to be consistent throughout as your body will need time to adjust to a new lifestyle.

According to Mayo Clnic, Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.


1.Take cold showers


With our bodies naturally warm internally (at 37 degrees on average), cold water to the skin helps increase our internal temperature temporarily to deal with the external stimuli. Your body will begin to find a way to warm itself up even more (by shivering) which will help improve circulation around the body. 


2.Improve lean muscle mass


It is no secret that those who are more lean with greater muscle mass have a faster metabolism than those of average or overweight build. Although your genetics do play a role in the rate of your metabolism, lean muscle helps with metabolism functionality as they body requires more energy (calories) to keep up with the energy requirements of the individual. 


3.Find time to relax and get more rest


On average, those who lead a stressful lifestyle sleep for 6 hours at a night. Stress elevates the hormone cortisol in the body which has an adverse affect on the metabolism due to the adrenal glands under continued pressure to keep you alert. In turn, your body slows down your metabolism to conserve energy for a 'flight or fight' situation. 


4.Eat more balanced meals


A variety is the essence of life, just like your muscles need to be in a constant state of shock to grow, your metabolism also needs a wide array of nutrients to help it maintain optimal performance. Balanced meals consisting macro- and micronutrients (such as fruits and vegetables) will help keep your body in great health, in turn, boosting your metabolism.


5.Eat a high-protein breakfast


If you have just exercised on an empty stomach or woke up from a prolonged period of sleep, a high-protein breakfast (including eating eggs, lean meat and fish) will help kick-start your metabolism for the day as these foods are harder to break down. Because they are more difficult for your body to break down, it helps keep your metabolism working for longer in order to transport the required nutrients around the body.
